How to stack a cord of wood

A cord is 128 cubic feet. With 16-inch logs, stack three rows 4 feet high and 8 feet long, or one row 4 feet high and 24 feet long. With 24-inch logs, two rows; with 12-inch logs, four.

Measure a stack
-- cords

Rows 4 feet high and 8 feet long: 48 ÷ log length in inches rows make a cord. With 18-inch logs that is 2.67 rows.

One row 4 feet high: its length for a cord is 128 ÷ (4 × log length in feet). With 16-inch logs, 128 ÷ (4 × 1.33) = 24 feet; with 18-inch logs, about 21.3 feet.

Step by step

  1. Measure your logsMeasure a few logs and note the average length in inches.
  2. Work out the rowsFor rows 4 feet high and 8 feet long, divide 48 by the log length in inches.
  3. Or work out one long rowFor one row 4 feet high, divide 128 by 4 times the log length in feet.
  4. Stack tightly and measureStack with ends lined up, then check the stack in the calculator.

Questions

Does stacking change how much wood I have?

No. But a loose stack with gaps measures bigger than the wood in it, so stack tightly before you measure.

My logs are different lengths. What do I enter?

Enter the average log length.

How do I check a stack I already have?

Enter its length, height, log length and rows in the calculator above.
